How to Practice Putting to Get Results

Today we are going to be looking at the last drill on the putting plan. This putting drill is essential to implement into your practice as it will help you out on the golf course, with your focus when you are standing over the ball to putt into the hole...from a few different distances.

Putting is all about being precise, the right line and the right speed, so what we are going to do today is work on getting the right speed with a few different length putts.

What you need for this drill…

  • Your putter.
  • Five golf balls.
  • Plus you will need to be putting at a hole.

To set your balls up for this putting drill, I want you to walk up to the hole (oh yes, make sure the green is reasonably flat for this putting drill). Then I want you to start from the hole and pace yourself, about one leg stride from the hole and place the ball on the ground. Repeat this until all of the five balls are placed on the putting green.

You should now have five balls placed about one metre apart in straight line away from the hole.

What you then do for this putting drill, is to start at the ball closest to the hole. This is your first ball which is about one metre from the hole.

I want you to set up for the ball and putt the ball into the hole. You can't go back to the next ball until you have sunk the ball into the hole. That ball must be sunk into the hole from that one metre position from the hole. If you miss the hole you have to replace the ball at that starting position which is one metre from the hole and putt it into the hole. Once in the hole you can...

Now you move back to the second ball which is about two metres from the hole. I want you to set up for the ball and putt the ball into the hole. That ball must be sunk into the hole from that two metre position from the hole. If you miss the hole you have to replace the ball at that starting position which is two metres from the hole and putt it into the hole. Once in the hole you can...

Now you move back to the third ball which is about three metres from the hole. I want you to set up for the ball and putt the ball into the hole. That ball must be sunk into the hole from that three metre position from the hole. If you miss the hole you have to replace the ball at that starting position which is three metres from the hole and putt it into the hole. Once in the hole you can...

Now you move back to the fourth ball which is about four metres from the hole. I want you to set up for the ball and putt the ball into the hole. . That ball must be sunk into the hole from that four metre position from the hole. If you miss the hole you have to replace the ball at that starting position which is four metres from the hole and putt it into the hole. Once in the hole you can...

Now you move back to the fifth ball which is about five metres from the hole. I want you to set up for the ball and putt the ball into the hole. That ball must be sunk into the hole from that five metre position from the hole. If you miss the hole you have to replace the ball at that starting position which is five metres from the hole and putt it into the hole.

Do not worry if this drill takes some time to do...the further you go back the more challenging it will be. So do not put a time limit on this drill.

This putting drill will work really well when you have a good putting technique, so just make sure that your set up is correct, your putting grip is effective and that your putter face is square (straight) every time you make contact with the ball.

You are practicing here with purpose. You are working on a few elements of your putting game every time. You are working on your line, your accuracy, your speed of the green and your focus all of these are important elements out on the golf course.

Did you know that poor putting technique can contribute to many errors on the golf course, even on the practice green. If you are practicing the wrong putting stroke day in and day out, it won't matter how much you practice this drill, you will just be reinforcing bad habits.
