#201: The Secret to Hitting Over The Bunker Successfully

The Secret to Hitting Over The Bunker Successfully

Are you struggling to get the ball over a bunker, like this, high lip, quite wide and you have been doing everything that I have asked you to do?

But it’s still not going over, it’s still rolling along the grass, rolling into the bunker and it’s not working! How can I make it work?

Well, I’m going to show you a very very simple tip on making sure you always get the ball over the bunker, even when you are doing everything right and it’s still not working, this is the one thing that just might be missing. It’s a challenge isn’t it, whether to go over the bunker or you have to play a shot out of the bunker, you still have a few challenges to take on.

But, what you have been doing, I know you have been diligently practising a few things I have been sharing with you recently but it’s still not working. Still not getting it over the bunker, it’s just going into the bunker, still staying low.

Well, it could be this one simple thing that is missing. I’ll tell you what it is very shortly. Remember we talked about going long back and long through, that was the whole focus of the action, long back, long through.

Something so simple, take the wrists out of play and get the ball to go up into the air. But, you are doing it and it’s still not working, well, it could be this element that is missing.

This element is that you are just not hitting the grass just before the ball and what’s happening it that you are looking at the ball versus that grass spot. So we are going to do something that is the cheapest golf aid that you will ever find out on a golf course, it’s so cheap it’s free.

What is it?

A leaf!

How cool is that?

What we are going to do is (we hope it’s not a windy day when you are trying this) to put a leaf in behind the ball down on the ground and when you set your club up, set it up on top of the leaf. The idea is to make sure that leaf flies up which means we have hit the ball and the ball pops up over the bunker.

We need to make sure we are hitting the leaf, but where are our eyes looking? Our eyes are no longer looking at the ball, they are looking at where the leaf is. The whole focus is to make sure we are hitting the leaf and then the ball will pop up into the air.

I’ll do a practice swing just to remind you of the action, long back and long through, that’s all we need to do. Set the club on top of the leaf and do exactly the same thing. The focus is to make sure the club goes through the leaf still doing the same action. You’ll see the ball pop up in the air. If you watched closely, you would have seen the leaf fly up as well.

Did you see the leaf fly up in the air?

I hope you did.

That’s what you need to do, a very simple tip, most inexpensive golf aid that you will ever need. If you have had lessons with me before, you will have seen this, I do talk about it quite a lot, that’s how we get the ball to lift up in the air.

Hope you enjoyed today’s tip. Love it if you could leave a comment and always remember this, Tee it High and Let it Fly.
