Why You Struggle With Chipping in Competition Games

O

Why is it that you can go out and practice your chipping yet when you are actually playing on the course it doesn’t seem to work so well?

Why is that so?

I’m going to show you why it is so.

You practice your chipping and it seems to be working pretty well, yet you come out onto the course and you can’t understand why it’s not working. How come you can’t get it to do what you want it to do.

The reason for that is, probably the most important reason, you don’t practice your chipping enough. What I mean by that (you think you are practicing enough and I’m sure you do) is you don’t practice it enough so that in any situation that comes up you can play your chip shot no matter what. It’s telling you that your chip shot is not ingrained yet, you’re not feeling what you need to be feeling in the stroke, you’re not getting your rhythm right.

If you have all those things in place you would actually execute your chip shot so much better. That’s what seems to be missing.

I teach a lot of people that have some great strokes, but they just don’t do it enough so that it’s ingrained and will happen every time they step out on the course. It's just like, "I hope this works today."

I don’t want you to have that feeling, I want it to work for you every time you step out on the course. You need to make sure you are going to create what you are creating here.

Now we’re just going to create a consistent swing action. That’s it. There is no hole, nothing to worry about, we’re on the edge of the green and I want you to just feel the stroke. What we want to do here is to create a nice easy rhythm. If you are doing the technique correctly, all you need to focus on is creating a nice easy rhythm.

When you create the nice, easy rhythm, what you will do each time is to start feeling what is going on. Which is what we want. We want to make sure that you are feeling what is going on so that every single time that you chip, you are feeling that you are doing something very similar and you are getting a very similar result with the ball.

So, if you are not getting the balls finishing in a nice little clump, within two metres of each other, then there is some work that needs to be done.

I’ll show you what I mean. The plan is to get the balls to finish in a nice little clump as close as we can. If you are doing that it means you are chipping more consistently. It’s creating a nice easy rhythm, which you need to do when you are out on the course.

If, however, the balls are spread out, then as you can see the result is quite different. Therefore, that means you haven’t got your rhythm quite yet. You need to make sure that the rhythm is set in place, the technique is there, you’re getting the feel that you can consistently chip the ball into a similar area every single time with the same club, doing the same swing. If they are spread out like this, then it’s not going to work for you.

I hope you enjoyed the tip today, it’s showing you that you need to create some rhythm and you are consistently doing the same thing over and over and over again, so you can do it in your sleep, you can do it blindfolded, no matter what. You do need to ingrain it first.
