#144 Web TV: Which Is The Best Golf Chipping Stance

Which Is The Best Golf Chipping Stance

Here’s a question for you! Which is better to chip with, an open stance, a closed stance, a square stance, what do you think?

What do they all mean?

Not sure?

That’s why you need to listen to this video above.

What an open stance means is that if you were to hit the ball towards the hole in a chip shot (I know we are nice and close and we would normally putt it, but we’ll do a chip shot for this example), your feet line will be opening up to the left, that’s what happens to right handed golfers, they are opening up the body. The hips are opening up, the shoulders are opening up and when we set the club up the club will be set nice and straight still so that we can get the ball to where we want it to go.

Now, if you were to think of a square stance and it is my favourite I must admit. A square stance is basically the feet line going in the same direction as the club face, nice and straight, back and through. Very simple stance.

A closed stance is obviously turning the other way. You have your feet, your shoulders, and everything closed off, but you can still turn the club face and face it the other way. Not recommended for a chip shot if you have a closed stance. The two best ones are a square stance and an open stance.

What I am going to recommend to you, have a guess, an open stance or a square stance?

A square stance, the reason why I love square stances is simply because it is the fundamental basics of a chip shot.

Once you have the fundamentals in place, the basics, you can then experiment, you can have an open stance, you can have a closed stance, you can do whatever you like because the basics are there.

Don’t go off and think that whoever you had lessons with said you should have and open stance and if you are struggling with your chip shot anyway don’t do it. Just have a square stance. When the basics set in and you have them in place, then you can do an open stance.

A good one to do is a square stance.

Basically, all that means is your feet are lined up in the direction you want the ball to go and the club face is going in the same direction, so that when you hit your chip shot it’s going to go nice and straight. That’s all we want. Straight back and straight through and the feet are going in the same direction as the club face is aimed.

It’s as simple as that and that’s why you should be using a square stance, especially in the beginning.

Once you have things worked out then you can open the club face, open your stance, experiment, see what kind of things happen with the ball, but until that’s in place, don’t do it. Just have a nice square stance.

Have an absolutely awesome day, take care, and remember; Tee it high and Let it fly.
