#132 Web TV: Overcome Topping The Ball In Your Golf Swing

Overcome Topping The Ball In Your Golf Swing

Today we are going to be working on overcoming the topping issue that people have with their golf swing.

It doesn’t seem to matter whether it happens with a driver, a hybrid, a wood, or an iron, there is a topping issue that goes on and I want to show you why that happens and I’m going to show you exactly how you can fix it.

I’m going to show you how to do it with an iron but you can apply it to everything.

Topping means that basically the bottom of the club hits the top of the ball. The reason that actually happens is because when you go to make contact with the ball the hands and the arms try to lift the club up. When the hands and the arms lift the club up you end up making contact with the top of the ball.

This is a massively common issue with golfers. If you are experiencing this problem and you are getting it consistently with your shots, then this is the reason. Because when you are actually hitting the ball there is a lot of lifting your arms and hands away from the ball.

When I teach people, we work heavily on making sure to have a really good contact position. The reason for that is to create consistency. The most important thing in a golf swing is not what you do in the back swing and it’s not how you look with the follow through. Even though it looks great to have a nice finish.

If you are missing the firm contact with the ball there is no point in doing a big back swing and a nice follow through, it’s not going to make any difference.

You need to be focusing on the contact part of the golf swing. From 8 o’clock position to 4 o’clock position. (Standing inside the clock). If you haven’t got this area right, then you are going to make mistakes time and time again.

If you have a look at the golf pros, a lot of people think that when the they actually make contact with the ball they are turning their hands. If you have a look in slow motion, you will see that they actually hit through the ball first.

Make sure to have the left arm nice and straight, the club is pointing straight down. That’s what we are looking for, overcoming the topping issue.

In saying that, this is what we are going to be working on. Just do a little half swing and make sure you have good contact and then hold. That’s it. How simple is that?

A lot of golf pros don’t teach you this. The most important thing in a golf swing is to make really, good solid contact, so that it is nice and consistent.

If you ever have a lesson with me, the first thing I would look at is your contact with the ball. If you do that then the balls will go nice and straight. How simple is that?

In my demonstration, I haven’t lifted the club up out of the shot, I’ve just gone straight through the ball and the ball has just taken off. That is how to overcome the topping issue.

Have an absolutely awesome day, take care, and remember; Tee it high and Let it fly.
