#130 Web TV: Playing an Uphill Lie with a Chip Shot

Playing an Uphill Lie with a Chip Shot

Here, an uphill lie, what to do?

How do we play the ball, do we play it off the front of our foot, do we play it on the inside of the left foot, do we play it off the centre, do we play it off the back foot? It’s guess work.

Let’s solve that today. I’m going to show you how to play a shot off an uphill lie. We’re going to be working on a chip shot "playing an uphill lie with a chip shot" today so there will be no more guess work, you will know exactly how to approach it.

There is not too much of a slope here but it will give you the exact information you need on how to play this shot.

The green is just to the right and we want to chip the ball a little bit so it lands on the green and runs up towards the hole. The thing people have a problem with is where they should be playing the ball from. I’ll give you an example. If we play from the back of the foot, it’s okay to play from there, but what you will find, especially when you are going on an uphill lie is that you will hit the ball a little bit too early, the club hasn’t come back into position and the ball shoots quite low. It shoots off along the ground. It’s okay, it doesn’t get you into any trouble.

The thing is you will find you are hitting the ball a little bit too early and you are not going to get the best response off the ball.

You can do it two ways, one, you can play it off the centre of the body and that is okay as well. Setting the ball up in the centre of the chest and pushing my hands forward a little, coming through and hold. It’s okay to do that. It’s still a good shot. Having the ball in the centre of the chest is fine.

Ideally, on an uphill lie, it is best to play the ball on the inside of the left heel, our front foot. Right handed will be the inside of the left foot, if you are a leftie it will be the inside of your right foot, your front foot.

Setting the ball in line with the inside of my left foot and then notice I push my hands way past my left leg and then do the shot and hold. Much better response of the ball off the club face.

Remember, line the ball up in line with the inside of the left heel if you are a right handed golfer. If you are a left handed golfer, line it up on the inside of your right foot. Make sure you push your hands forward and hold your position at the end of the shot. Really push your hands forward, make contact and then hold.

The ball comes off the club face really well, it pops off nicely, you would have seen that. If you saw the earlier shot where I hit the ball from in line with the right foot, it tends to stay low and scoots off with a little bit less control. We have a lot more control when we play if off the inside of the left foot.

There’s a good little tip for you, when you are on an uphill lie you will know exactly what to do when you play your chip shots.

Have an absolutely awesome day, take care, and remember; Tee it high and Let it fly.
