#103 Web TV: Chipping Tips - Improve Your Accuracy

Chipping Tips - How To Improve Your Accuracy in Your Chipping.

How would you like to improve your accuracy in chipping?

Well, that’s what we are going to do today.  I’m going to show you exactly what you need to do to improve your accuracy when you chip through today's chipping tips.

What we are going to be looking at today is improving your accuracy for your chipping.  What I mean by this particular drill that I am going to show you today is really improving your alignment for your chipping.  Even though there is a flag here on this green that I am working with you right now we are not actually going to be aiming at that flag in this particular video.

I am just going to show you how to improve the actual alignment and the actual area in which you need to chip your ball to so that your chips are going straighter so that we have that accuracy in the sense of where we want the ball to go.

I’ll show you how we do that.  You can use tees for this exercise or you can use golf balls.  I am going to use balls, and we are going to place a ball down and then one on this side and we are going to use the length of our feet.  What we actually have is a little goal area. Now what we will be working on is improving our chipping in the sense of our accuracy because we want to hit the ball through our little goal area.

We want to have the ball about one metre from our little goal area and all we want to do is to perform a chip shot but we have to make sure that we go through the goal, nothing to do with the flag right now. This is purely to improve our accuracy with our alignment.

We want to work on chipping our ball into our goal area and then every time you do that you get a point.  You can score yourself.  When you get to ten points going through the goal area ten times then you can give yourself the next challenge.

Make sure that you are doing your practice shot.  I always talk about in the Eagle formula, of doing a pre-shot routine.  This particular exercise that you are going to do, add your pre-shot routine in because it will give you some pressure as well.  We experience pressure when we are out on the golf course so we want to make sure that when we practice we experience that too.  We start to put a bit of pressure on ourselves, it’s really important that you have pressure practice.

Now, we line that ball up and come down to get set and the plan is to allow the ball to then be chipped through the goal area.  You will have seen that the ball went through the goal area. If that has worked and you get ten shots in a row, let’s work on ten shots in a row through the goals then you can give yourself another challenge.

I’m going to share that one with you right now.

The next challenge is that you can then decrease the goal area, maybe halve it and have it about half the width of your feet and then you do the same thing again.  We have the ball about a metre out again, then go through all the process of lining up, we do our Eagle formula, the pre-shot routine, get that practice swing happening, then we line up and get set to hit the ball.

We move down, we get set, and then we perform our shot.  If it goes through, again, we get another point but you will see that what it does is to challenge you to become more accurate with your line when you chip.

Now, what I want you to do is to go and practice that one and let me know how you go with it.

Have an absolutely awesome day, take care, and remember; tee it high and let it fly.

  • Hi Dave thanks for your comments. They are well received. I have also done many chipping videos around those very topics that have been mentioned and I will send them in upcoming ‘blast from the past’ tips.

  • Great drill for chipping accuracy. Tiff, might be helpful if you expain to your viewers your setup, stance closed and close to the ball with stroke mirroring each other on the backswing and followthrough. Think it helpful to review these fundamentals as you demonstrate your drill. Good luck with your new website changes. Dave O. VT

  • Hi Tiff
Another wonderful tip. Thank you! I really like the idea of focusing on the straightness of the chip and also of adding a bit of pressure to the practice. There are so many shots around the green that blow out my score and this practice looks like just what I need. I’m going to start with it tomorrow.
    Thanks so much
    Cheers
