Can you build confidence from scratch when you feel like you are at confidence zero?
Absolutely. There is a confidence formula that you can use to help build confidence in you so that you can have confidence when you are playing your sport out on the playing field. Always remember that confidence is like a muscle as you can build confidence with practise. Just like you build your sports skills, it is a practise.
In today's episode, we're going to focus on the HAS Confidence Formula. That's right, we're talking about building confidence! I'm going to show you how to use the HAS Confidence Formula to build confidence in your sport. These are the core elements that build confidence.
The HAS Confidence Formula stands for:
- Habits.
- Attitude.
- Skills.
If you are finding that you're lacking confidence in your sport?
You're not alone. Many women who play sport feel the same. They often feel nervous, worry, feel like they will let other people down or that they will look foolish about how they will perform, especially in competitions.
This I understand that totally. I've been there myself. When you don't believe in yourself, you don’t perform well. You think you're not good enough, and that lack of belief can be paralyzing.
We need to build up your belief and confidence. That’s where the HAS Confidence Formula comes in.
Let’s break it down:
Habits: Develop positive routines that support your confidence.
Attitude: Cultivate a positive mindset and self-belief.
Skills: Focus on improving your skills to boost your confidence.
How do you start to implement this HAS confidence formula?
Start by identifying your negative self-talk and replacing it with positive affirmations. Build good habits that support your sport, work on your skills regularly, and maintain a positive attitude. With time, you'll see a big improvement in your confidence.
1. HABITS
We're talking about mental habits—what's going on in here (points to head), physical habits—how you're looking after your body, nutritional habits—what you're putting in your body, and habit skills—your approach to performing in your sport. It's all these habits combined that build your confidence.
2. ATTITUDE
What is your mental attitude toward your sport? Do you think you're not good enough? Do you feel like you're making progress, or are you stuck? Your attitude greatly influences your performance. Your mental attitude shapes your results. If you haven't already, make sure to check out my episode on building confidence where I talk about TFAR—thoughts, feelings, actions, results. It ties directly into your attitude and how it creates your outcomes.
3. SKILLS
This includes the technical skills of your sport, mental skills, physical training, nutritional strategies, stability, strength, and mobility skills. All these aspects contribute to your overall performance and confidence. It might seem overwhelming, but it’s about creating awareness. Identify which areas you might be missing and work on them gradually. For instance, you might have great technical skills but need to improve your mental attitude.
Let me share a quick story.
When I was pursuing a professional tennis career, I lacked confidence and belief. I didn’t realize I needed specific habits, the right mental attitude, and particular skills to succeed. Once I identified these gaps, I made sure to work on them. Now, I coach others to do the same.
How can we start applying the HAS Confidence Formula in your life?
Begin by focusing on these three areas:
- Develop positive habits.
- Cultivate a strong mental attitude.
- Improve your skills.
Identify which area needs the most work and start there. Remember, it’s a journey, and every small step counts.
