#64 Web TV: One of the Great Putting Secrets - One Handed Putt Drill

Putting in Golf- One Handed Putt Drill

Last week I was sharing with you how to set your golf goals for the year ahead. I also offered a putting plan to get the ball rolling so to speak.

In order to make sure you are getting your putting plan correct I thought it would be a great idea over the next few weeks to show you how to do the drills correctly. I want to ensure that you get your putting technique just right!

One thing before I share what you need to do here, is remember the putting plan is for purposeful practice. If you do it correctly you will be focused and you will get the results.

Here we are going to look at the half a metre putt and the one metre putt with your right hand (for right handed golfers). If you are a left handed player then you will use your left hand for this.

What you need for this putting drill - the One Handed Putt Drill - Half Metre Putt;

  • Putter
  • 5 golf balls
  • One Tee

When you are on the putting green, start from the hole and place the tee down half a metre from the hole. Use the tee as your starting point. Place your 5 golf balls at the tee ready to start the putting drill.

Set yourself up as you would to putt. Make sure your putting stance is correct, feet shoulder width apart, your eyes are set up so that you are looking down at the ball.

Take your grip with your right hand with the palm of your hand facing the hole. If you have the palm of your right hand facing the hole, you will have the putter face facing the hole. (refer to the above video)

The plan here is to putt the ball into the hole ensuring the putter face stays square facing the hole. You want to make sure that the right arm continues forward once you have made contact with your golf ball, as the putter needs to follow the ball. You want to think that you are doing an underarm throw, the arm has to continue to follow the ball so the ball goes in the desired direction.

The wrist on your right hand doesn't move about, it stays fixed in position, the action comes from your arm and shoulder. (refer to the video above)

You need to putt the ball in the hole 20 times in a row before you move onto the next drill. Just hitting 20 putts whether they go in or out won't help your concentration, you need to make sure that you focus on this drill. If you focus when you are doing your putting drills, it will help you immensley when you are out on the golf course.

Once you have completed that drill you can then move onto the next drill which is basically the same drill except you are one metre away from the hole.

What you need for this putting drill - the One Handed Putt Drill - One Metre Putt;

  • 5 golf balls
  • One Tee

When you are on the putting green, start from the hole and place the tee down one metre from the hole. Use the tee as your starting point. Place your 5 golf balls at the tee ready to start the putting drill.
